Dear Reader,

Nordic Walking - The New Exercise Trend…

It looks like cross-country skiing but without the snow or skis. It’s regularly described as ‘Fitness Walking with poles’… It’s known across the globe as ‘Nordic Walking’!

The Perfect Total Body Exercise

Nordic Walking is the perfect ‘total body’ exercise that puts your whole body to good ‘use’ without the ‘abuse’. It’s ‘functional’ fitness at its best and almost anyone can do it. Nordic Walking combines aerobic and muscle conditioning exercise to create a new way of exercising. It takes place in the great outdoors (no expensive gym fees to pay) and on any surface, from neighborhood streets to local beaches, forest trails, hills and mountains.

Walking... Only Smarter

Nordic Walking is often described as ‘Walking... Only Smarter’, a claim not lost on the estimated 5 million + Nordic Walking enthusiasts now in Europe alone. In Finland 16% of the population (around 760,000 people) Nordic Walk at least once a week. Amongst the over 65's this jumps to 26%.

Technique
Nordic Walking animation courtesy of www.nordicportal.net
As in cross-country skiing (classic style) the poles are planted alternately just behind the hip. As you push off with your right pole your left leg is forward. Then as your left arm swings forward, you step forward onto your right foot and you plant your left pole just behind your left hip and so on

Approved by Business & Politicians

The ability for Nordic Walking to boost fitness levels has been recognized by business and politicians. In Switzerland two health insurance companies offer financial bonuses to policy holders who attend Nordic Walking lessons. While in Germany the cost of attending a certified course for hospital outpatients is refunded by the government.

Instruction

Like any fitness or sport related activity the best way to learn is via proper instruction…

Do you know anyone who has tried to teach themselves a sport such as golf or tennis and then months or even years down the road they start taking lessons wishing they had done so from day one?

It’s exactly the same with Nordic Walking. There is a very specific technique, master it and you will enjoy your Nordic Walking and gain all the benefits from day one. Save yourself money by not taking proper instruction and you will probably struggle and may never quite master the technique. Worst of all your poles will end up gathering dust in the garage because you get frustrated and quit.

With proper instruction most people are able to learn the basics of Nordic Walking in a couple of hours. David is flexible, so if a two hour session is too long for you he will break your training down into shorter sessions. After learning the basics, if you wish you can always come back for a future session or sessions to brush up your technique or perhaps learn more advanced skills.
